How world’s largest and India’s ruling political party plagiarised our work without giving us credit

w3layouts – We are a small webshop Startup based out of Nellore, a small town in Andhra Pradesh. We build free premium quality HTML templates where anyone can download our designs and start their website.

BJP’s official site has been down for a while. Yesterday, we were happy to see that they were back, especially when we were told that they chose to use one of W3Layout’s Template.

It was bought to our notice by @ashishdevziners on twitter

The design used by BJP was “Peek” – a Landing Page Bootstrap Responsive Web Template built by W3Layouts, which can be found here. While the design is free to use, it includes a backlink. A small link at the end of the page, which indicates that the design was “design by W3Layouts”.

We, at W3Layouts, were initially happy and excited that BJP IT cell was using our template, then devastated to see our work being used by BJP removing the backlink without paying, and giving no credit whatsoever to W3Layouts.

If one wishes to remove the backlink, W3Layouts website provides an option to buy the credit for the removal of backlink by paying Rs 600. (~USD $9).

While the visible backlinks were removed, it was clear that BJP was still using the W3Layouts code as it was evident in the source code of the page.

After we created an archive of their website at archive.org, we took the issue to BJP’s notice through twitter.

No reply from @BJP4India or BJP’s IT team

After this, they removed the code where ever w3layouts was mentioned.

While they may have changed the code completely now, we are surprised at how a National Political Party headed by a leader who calls himself the “Security Guard (Chowkidaar) of the country” chose to steal a small shop’s sweat and blood and also chose to disregard the claim when found cheating.

Is it that difficult to acknowledge someone’s work?

“Chowkidaar” is just for Twitter campaigns. They’re nothing but a bunch of goons who have a history of taking images from the web from another country and passing it off as “BJP’s work”. To think they can build the largest party office in the world but can’t pay for a simple website template! And you expect BJP to care about startups?!

#ChaukidarHiChorHai. It means the guard himself is thief. Now u must understand why this is trending in India.

The BJP are a party of CHORS. But, stooping so low is a new low for this bigoted, thuggish, corrupted organisation.

I dont think chowkidar himself have time to steal your sweet and blood. You should not blame him. You can express your anger to IT cell but not chowkidar.

Well well well… If PM takes credit of surgical strikes (which was actually done by Indian Army) without doing anything…. then he must be blamed for the theft also..

Acknowledging the hard work and design is very much necessary for the freemium model to survive.
The DA weight of a backlink from a website as heavy as BJP.org would be really massive for you guys.

But, I think the website maintenance would have been outsourced and not managed directly by BJP.

They believe in outsourcing everything from education to healthcare.
Lately, they’ve also started to show some anti-science symptoms in their narrative.

Well, there’s one huge advantage for you guys in this whole fiasco: think of all the free publicity your outfit will generate. You are famous now and you have #TemplateChor party to thank for that. Congratulations.

I am a supporter of BJP but this is very sad. I request BJP IT cell to take this into consideration and ensure the one responsible for stealing intellectual property is penalised since it brings a bad name to the entire party.

Ha ha… Welcome to BJP where they claim everyone else’s good work as theirs…
The misery of the nation is that we are run by a party which has no morals and ethics

BJP should give credit to w3layouts for their hard work. It requires a lot of effort and man work to build any responsive template.

Very disheartening really but I’ve seen this behaviour in many places since such themes can be downloaded for free done developers remove all references to the actual source. However this is a special case and there should have been some acknowledgement
